Big update on my DJ series with Zeds Dead, Kids & Explosions, and DJ Barletta.

So, I’ve still been working on that DJ Series for BlogTO. So far it’s going well! Since the holidays started i’ve done three additions. The most recent being…

ZEDS DEAD!

So… Zeds Dead are one of my favourite DJ’s and this was definitely one of the most interesting shoots I’ve done. At the very beginning I requested two hours and asked to shoot them on the main stage of a local club, Kool Haus. By the time the shoot started I had half an hour and couldn’t shoot in the room planned – luckily another major club, The Guvernment, is attached to it. Although it was challenging I’m still happy with the results!

This shoot really made me realize the pressure and the need for solid planning when photographing subjects with a tight schedule – the guys had other interviews and shoots that day.

Everything ran well! The dudes were super chill and the shoot, once started, was generally relaxed.

If you’re into the electronic music thing you should seriously check these guys out. They’re super talented and put on a damn good show – we saw them that night!

Check out the interview by Igor Bonifacic and more photos here:

http://www.blogto.com/music/2011/12/get_to_know_a_dj_zeds_dead/

Big thanks to Braeden Vanrooy and Justin Amyotte for helping me out!

P.s. You have no idea how small The Guvernment actually is when it’s not filled with people.

Kids & Explosions

A while back I attended this really cool event where a local organization, Dudebox, created a ‘pop up bar’ inside a car garage that was about to be torn down. The whole concept was really cool but was even cooler was seeing Kids & Explosions live. After seeing him I knew BlogTO would be interested in featuring him so I contacted a few people and shortly after shot him for our Call And Response series.

I shot Kids & Explosions AKA Josh Raskin in his work place where he’s creating a sound studio out of an old meat locker. I had much more time than with Zeds Dead so we were able to get a few different locations in.

Josh’s music is so unique. Some people probably wont like it but if you do you you’ll love it like I do. He combines a huge array of different songs to create his own pieces unlike much else.

He was also nominated for an Academy Award for an animated short film he made called I Met The Walrus – It’s about a boy interviewing John Lennon.

Check out the interview by Aldrin Taroy and also more photos here:

DJ BARLETTA

I also photographed local DJ, Hans Edquist aka DJ Barletta. I was able to shoot him right by my place near a church that is basically attached to the Eaton Centre. It was definitely a chilly day but everything ran smoothly! It was hilarious shooting right in Dundas Square having all the tourist stare at us.

I was a little nervous about the church location as I knew so many people would be walking through having cut it really close to an actual Christmas mass. The church turned out to have some really cool locations that worked well! Score!

Here’s some of his music…

And a behind the scenes of me shooting and Andrew so kindly helping me out at Dundas Square…

There’s still many more DJ’s coming. It’s keeping me extremely busy but I’m excited to have the series completed. It’ll make for a good series and it’s already been providing some good networking!

Must keep shooting…

So much photography lately!

I’ve been shooting a lot of environmental portraits lately and I’m really happy about it. The DJ series is keeping me extremely busy but I’m definitely happy about it. My portfolio is getting better and better pretty quickly.

Even while shooting the DJ series I managed to shoot Candice from Elite Models.

Originally I was planning on shooting outdoors near Dundas Square but obviously it had to rain. Luckily my good friend Andrew had some hookups with the abandoned homeless shelter across the street and we brought everything together last minute. I’m happy with the results.

Another big thanks to Andrew Cottingham for assisting and also a shout out to my other good friend, Brendan Rygus, who has been letting me use his car to transport the gear around. I swear one of the hardest things about doing shoots like these is just getting the gear around.

Saturday I’m shooting my biggest shoot yet. Epic location, epic subjects, the whole thing is just going to be epic. Be stoked because I definitely am.

Hope everyone is doing well and the Christmas season isn’t stressing you out too much.

Take care,
Dylan

DJ Medley - First feature in my DJ series for BlogTO.

I recently started a feature series for BlogTO on Toronto based DJ’s. Although it’s going to be challenging getting 10 DJ’s and photographing them all in different locations I feel it’ll be a good addition to my portfolio, give me practice on environmental lighting and be a cool experience meeting some of the cities best DJ’s.

For the first entry my writer, Igor Bonifacic, decided to feature local talent, Matt Medley AKA DJ Medley. This dude was super cool – not only is he a prominent DJ both at Cobra and Andy Poolhall he also runs it. Any time you see Medley dj he’s not only the performer but he also plans and runs each night. If that isn’t keeping him busy enough he’s also an established web designer – truly a man of many talents.

You can check out the article here: http://www.blogto.com/music/2011/12/get_to_know_a_dj_matt_medley/

I’m hoping to do that background thing with every DJ. This may be a challenge with the winter wind but we’ll see how it goes.

There you can see my good friend, Braeden VanRooy, who was nice enough to help me out for the shoot. It was cold as tits but we fought through and got it done. Thanks Braeden!

I didn’t even mean to make the lights in the background look like hearts! Win!

And here’s a little Behind the scenes on how Braeden kept warm…

My next post should be in a few days. I shot a model in an abandoned homeless shelter – the photos are awesome, I promise.

Thanks guys!

So, I’ve been kind of mad at myself for my lack of coverage of the local OccupyTO movement. With working 40+ hrs a week and leaving after dark my motivation to head down to the park has decreased. Although I may not have taken photos of the park in a while I’m still following it religiously and still find it equally captivating.

I took the following photos about two weeks ago.

The March

There was a march on October 23…

The Camp

The next day I visited the camp to see what has changed. Its crazy to witness the speed that the camp develops at.

One of the most impressive things at the camp is their kitchen. The kitchen not only feeds the people occupying the park but also feeds the homeless of Toronto. The neighbouring church has also allowed them to use their kitchen a few times a week. It’s inspiring to see a movement help the needy while still trying to sustain their own living conditions…

The kitchen is directly against the churches walls. The church has openly supported the movement…

Days three and four of my coverage of OccupyTO

Day 3
Dundas Square

After getting home from work I got word through OccupyTO’s twitter that their march had taken and occupied Dundas Square – being two blocks away I grabbed my camera and headed down to beginning of Day 3 of my coverage.

When I arrived the group had seated in the middle of the intersection of Dundas and Yonge.

By doing this they were intending on protesting the way the local transit system, the TTC, had discontinued stopping at St. James park due to the movement occupying it. It also drew a lot of criticism from the citizens of Toronto as most were frustrated that they were interrupting the busiest intersection in the city during rush hour.

While there they formed “99%” in the intersection. They did this to attract the attention of the media helicopters flying above. It worked, shortly after you could see the live broadcast being aired on the screen on the CityTV building nearby. Again, one of the movements biggest goals is to attract attention of the media to spread their message.

St. James Park At Night

Arriving back at the park I instantly noticed the amount of new tents that had been constructed. It really made me realize how quickly the community was building.

Pictured here is the library at night. Notice how many more books had been added since the day before…

All day the ‘kitchen’ is offering free food donated from different places. Local restaurants continuesly donate food and offer anything they could not sell, market vendors provide essentials such as fruits, vegetables, and bread and water is purchased through the donations given.

Although the vibe of St. James park is generally positive, productive, and uplifting there is still the looming feeling knowing that you’re at an illegal camp. This sign reads “DO NOT WORRY – if the police tell us to move we will receive WARNING! – The City of Toronto will make this decision!! Tell your counsellors to let us stay”

DAY 4

To continue my coverage of OccupyTO I decided to head down to St. James park to catch the evenings General Assembly.

As mentioned before, the General Assembly is a public meeting to discuss issues, decisions, updates, and general suggestions towards the movement. This GA was the smallest I had been to (100-200 people) so it was a lot more personal and therefore more passionate. People were continuously raising concerns (forming an x with your arms shows you completely disagree and forming a triangle with your hands shows you have a suggestion) so the meeting ran more than three hours.

Some things discussed were…

- Actions towards unionizing with the TTC strike on Saturday in hopes to increase the movements support. This was particularly inspiring as the union going on strike are striking for the exact things the Occupy Movement stands for.
- Creating a committee in charge of reaching out to local known people for support. This led into asking for rides for people to head to a speech Naomi Klein was speaking at in order to ask her to speak on Saturdays march.
- Cleanliness in the park – specifically addressed towards two beer cans found.
- Discussion on how to best address the media to give a response better supported by the movement as a whole. Also, that there will be a seminar discussing public relations.
- Etc.

The GA ended with a long debate on when to leave for their planned march to Dundas Square.

The March To Dundas Square

The march started off powerfully with someone yelling “Let’s take the streets” and the crowd of 60-100 people began marching towards Dundas Square. Although it started powerfully it quickly became confused and I couldn’t help but feel embarrassed for the marchers.

The group had to stop on numerous occasions in order for the back half of the group to catch up and everyone had to be reminded to slow down and take their time. Although there was a lack of leadership in the march people were still passionate about it and chanted the usual slogans such as “we are the 99%” and “the people united will never be defeated”

When the group arrived at Dundas Square they were indecisive on what they wanted to do. A few people wanted to stand in the square and a few wanted to occupy the intersection of Yonge & Dundas. The group ended up standing where they were and doing a sort of native pow-wow like dance.

Thanks again for reading! I didn’t get out shooting tonight (with working 40+ hours a week I needed to take time and catch up on personal things) but I plan on shooting the park in the rain tomorrow night. Also, Saturday is a huge march so expect photos of that – Expect another post on Sunday, probably.

Also, thanks SO much for the amount of responses I’ve already received!

My coverage of the Occupy Movement in Toronto.

Inspired by New York cities Occupy Wall Street, the occupy movement has spread around the world and I’ve put myself as close to the action as I can. On Saturday, October 15th the people of Toronto took to the streets to voice their concerns and I was, and continue, to be there with them and my camera.

I find the topic of Occupy Toronto to be a sensitive one. Depending on who you talk to you’ll either hear a rant of sincere support or a rant of complaints that ‘those hippies need to get jobs’. Personally I’m more interested in the movement itself – the way one message can grow from a small group in New York City to a movement that has spread around the world and is taking serious action. I also believe in most their overall message, I just believe they still need to make it more clear with a solid and simple message.

What is the Occupy Movement? In simple: It’s a movement to send a message to the financial institutions and remind them that they are there to serve us – that their attention needs to be drawn to the people (the 99%) and not the elite (the 1%) who are making the majority of the income.

In full, I’ll take it straight from OccupyTO’s website:

“Occupy Toronto is a movement that intends to show our solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movements and stand in unity with the rest of the world to seek and work towards drastic changes to economic systems that are destroying our economy, social liberties, and environment. We are, through entirely non-violent means, sending a message to the financial sector worldwide that banks exist to serve us, not the other way around, that the practices of speculation and fractional reserve lending have created a massive inequality and are no longer valid systems.

Current monetary policies, whether they are enacted under the idea of globalization and privatization, or some other guise, are unacceptably hurting the people that have propped them up, the very people they were created to help. Our target is to change these systems to help the 99% of the population, instead of just the elite 1% that they currently benefit. Everyone is encouraged to join the movement, this movement affects us all.”

Basically, the rich need to stop getting more rich and the poor need to stop getting more poor.

Please visit OccupyTO’s website for more information: http://occupyto.org/

From here on in I’ll attempt to stick to a photo-essay style of post. This post will be updated every few days as I continue to cover the movement in Toronto. Enjoy.

Day 1 & Day 2

Part of OccupyTO was to take over St. James Park as their home and a place for all of the activist to come together, share ideas, organize, and do whatever it takes to make the movement stronger.

Make-shift buildings act as different places for organizing…

People have set up a ‘tent city’ to maintain occupancy over the park…

A library has been set up to provide educational readings on legal rights and information on protests and other movements…

In the park they provide many services to provide a healthy living for the people staying. Through donations they have been able to provide a medic tent, free food vendors, meditation seminars, women only sleeping areas, 24/7 security patrol, etc…

Social media has an extremely important role in the movements process. In order to grow the word needs to be spread. Pictured here is the ‘media centre’ where people are providing live feed and updates 24/7.

During one of the many marches through the city the protesters stood in front of the CityTV building and yelled to be aired. The station did…

It’s not a protest without signs…

Drum circles are very popular at these kind of events…

Every day they hold general assemblies where large groups of people gather in the park to discuss the day, make decisions, and decide what their next actions are going to be. The assemblies are very powerful as they use the ‘people’s mic’ system to get the audio across – to do this one person will yell something and the crowd will echo it back yelling it out in sections.

The police have been extremely kind, respectful, and so far have gained the respect of the protestors. I believe this is strongly based on all the mistakes they made during the G20 summit last year. Although there is fear of a raid at the park any moment, so far they have not been a problem. Saying that, there was obviously still a police presence…

Although the vibe is mostly positive the sound of helicopters circling reminds you of where you are and why you are there…

I will be updating this as days progress. So far I have managed to be there every day and am still getting plenty of interesting photos. Until then I encourage you to educate yourself on the movement. And, to those people thinking “screw those hippies” I say this…

What if people didn’t stand up for what they believe?

Portraits of friends, the Polaris Prize, and Laura Marling photos!

Hey!

So the other day I decided to test out some lighting. Here are some photos of my friends:

Tony!

Kate!

Andy!

Roommates!

Last week I photographed the Polaris Prize gala. It was a really cool experience! Basically it’s a Canadian contest with a 30,000 dollar prize. The thing I like most about this contest is that a band of any size can compete against each other and not be judged based on fame.

They describe themselves as:

A not-for-profit organization that honours, celebrates and rewards creativity and diversity in Canadian recorded music. Polaris recognizes and markets albums of the highest artistic integrity, without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation, or sales history. it is adjudicated by selected music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers.

On Friday night I was lucky enough to be able to photograph Laura Marlings show. I’m a big fan of her music and the show was incredible. Her voice is amazing and she’s even better live.

I recommend you check out her music too:

Saturday I shot a wedding. I haven’t shot a wedding in a long time and it was actually nice to do it again! The location was beautiful and it reminded me how awesome the vibe at weddings are – everyone is happy!

Things are going well and I’ve been thinking of big projects lately. I need to do a gallery showing!!!

A friend of mine, Zach Gordensky, is taking a trip to Finland to listen to some music. He needed a photo so I offered to take some for him. Here’s a few photos from the shoot.

Living downtown Toronto can sometimes become overwhelming. Leaving my front doorstep I instantly become submerged in a sea of people – mostly tourists. Over time not escaping to somewhere with more nature and serenity can cause me to become pretty stressed. Knowing this I jumped on the opportunity to visit my hometown, Brockville, to chill out. Although the weekend was generally hectic I made sure to take a little trip and ‘poke around’ in some nature.

I knew of this location in Gatineau Hills because of a trip my first year photography class took. That day was a particularly good day for me as I was first meeting all my fellow photography students and, well, we got to go photograph somewhere awesome.

Here’s a photo I took 3 years ago:

(Notice the cheesy frame. Oh, that learning curve)

Here’s the photo I took Saturday:

Here’s a photo I took of my friend Tom.

Here’s a funny photo my mom found that I took when I was in high school. It’s homework teaching us about shutter speed – glad I figured that one out!

Tomorrow night I’m shooting the Polaris Music Prize gala! Pretty excited about it.

A really good friend of mine is leaving soon to begin travelling around the world for a year – our last day together couldn’t have been any better!

We decided to spend the day at Kensington Market in Toronto. Basically, it’s awesome. Lot’s of awesome shops, music, people, and general good times. I borrowed a Canon 24mm Tilt/Shift from work and was excited to get the opportunity to test it out.

To begin, here’s a photo of Jess! I’m really happy to have gotten her photo the last day I saw her! I’m so excited for her – this trip is exactly what she’s meant to do.

(Window lens flare)

While we were walking I noticed this girl sitting in front of a store called “The Fairies Pyjamas”. I took a few steps and quickly turned around realizing how awesome the photo would be.

As we were walking we came across a DJ playing inside this giant dragon made of garbage… oddly enough I didn’t take a picture of that. I DID take a picture of a table near by.

Here’s a car with trees growing out of it in front of an awesome painting. Hippy style.

Two photos that go together.

There’s also this one:

Life is good.

Blink 182, Bon Iver, Toxic Vision Party, Wemf... summer is fun.

I was recently hired at a photo gear rental place called Headshots. Im beginning to get used to the Monday – Friday, 9-5 lifestyle and I’m excited about the opportunities it’ll provide. Being surrounded by the gear for 9 hours a day will definitely improve my photography on the technical side and I’ll have the opportunity to meet a lot of people. Being surrounded by photography will inspire me to shoot more.

So yeah… I’m always shooting concerts so I’ll start with that.

I went to Bon Iver a few weeks ago. I’ve listened to him on and off for a while now and seeing him live was amazing. The stage was full of people playing different instruments.

More photos on the review.

I also photographed Blink 182. This was really exciting for me because I’ve been a huge fan of Blink for years. They were that band that really got me into music and I’ve never completely stopped listening to them.

Here’s a photo I took of the band Aggressor. Three flashes, yo.

There’s a rad clothing company out of Toronto that was holding a party at a local bar. The owner, Sharon, asked me to shoot the event and I was definitely down considering the agenda. Live music, a bunch girls in badass bodysuits, live music and poll dancing. The clothes are all hand made and extremely creative in terms of design. You should check out Toxic Vision here. Check out the photos from the night!

I recently went to WEMF and didn’t feel like taking my 5D so I took my ‘fun camera’ (35mm film). The whole weekend was insane and I was able to see some amazing DJ’s live. Here’s some photos I took.

And here’s a photo of my friends hanging out in a park.
